Background:
Christian Aid works via local agencies overseas that
know the local priorities and the resources that are available. Funds
raised by efforts such as ours do not go via governments, either here or
abroad.
Why is the money needed?
Funds are always needed to help to reduce long-term
poverty. This is done by means such as the provision of clean water,
education, seed corn etc. In addition, though we are asked to respond to
emergency appeals that arise from disasters around the world at any time.
When do we collect?
The
main
work in St Mary’s Alverstoke for Christian Aid takes place in Christian
Aid Week.
Our warmest thanks go to all the various volunteer helpers in the parish
for their efforts with this. They not only collect the funds but also show
Christians at work within the parish. In 2005 there were about 127 streets
covered by about 92 collectors.
How much do we raise in St Mary’s?
Firstly our thanks go
to St Faith's and St Francis' for
their support and help with envelope distribution; we also appreciate the
support offered by Ted and Sue Simpson,
especially in finding additional collectors for ‘The Week’. We appreciate
the response of the parish to our appeals
both in time and donations.
The main fund raiser was the
'Week' and our warmest thanks go to all the helpers for their
efforts. They not only collected the funds but also showed Christians at
work within the parish. There were about 127 streets covered by about 99 collectors
In the year Nov 2005 to
November 2006 the parish, raised £6,900 with a further £800 tax reclaim
from Gift Aid, a total of £7,700.
This included over £800 for the Pakistan Earthquake appeal.
From Dec 2006 to date £635 has been
raised, with another £99 as gift aid
The use of the 'Gift Aid' on the back of envelopes is becoming
accepted and raised a valuable £899 tax refund.
Christian Aid works via, local agencies overseas who know the priorities
and resources available, funds do not go via
governments. Funds are needed to help reduce long term poverty, such as
clean water, education, seed corn etc and to deal with emergencies
Do we need more helpers?
St Mary’s
Alverstoke now collects in most of the
parish in the `Week`, but each year we need additional collectors as
replacement volunteers and, hopefully, so that we can cover even more
streets. If you can help, or know someone who can, please let us know on
02392 351196.
Many Thanks
